The Civic Choir
was founded in 1965 and today is a popular and thriving group of 58
members, singing for pleasure and to maintain the highest standards in
choral music. Our repertoire is diverse, ranging from classical to
pop, including songs from the shows, folk songs and spirituals. On
average, we perform five concerts each year in Chester-le-Street - three
are organised by ourselves, one in Spring, when the programme will
include a major classical piece. Our summer concert is on a lighter
theme and in winter we perform a programme of carols and other Christmas
music. Whilst we have some firm favourites, new pieces are introduced
for each of our concerts. See the Repertoire page for a small selection
of past performances. We regularly receive invitations to sing at
various venues and events around the region and we are always pleased to
be able to support local charities.
The choir
comprises Sopranos,

Altos,

and Tenors and Basses
We are fortunate to
have many talented soloists in our midst. From time to time we invite
guest soloists and musicians to join us in our performances.
Some memorable
highlights
It was a huge pleasure and experience
to share the stage with Lesley Garrett at the Riverside Ground. Our
concert in Spring 2005 was a local premiere and recorded live. It was
the first ever performance of a brand new composition of the Concert
Mass in D Minor, written by Alan Howarth, a member of the choir’s tenor
section.
